Different types Persian Carpets
The word carpet actually conveys the meaning of underlayment and flooring, so carpets, rugs, kilims, jajims, zillows, etc. each are considered as a kind of carpet, but in the meantime, what we call Iranian carpets is actually the rug.
Most people may not know the difference between a carpet and a rug, but as mentioned, carpets are a general term for different types of floorings, while rugs are a subset of carpets and are referred to as pile rugs, which we know as hand-woven rugs and machine-made rugs.
Types of Iranian rugs
Rugs are usually divided into several categories based on material, size, and design, each of which we will briefly discuss in this section.
Classification of different types of Iranian rugs based on material
The warp and weft of this type of rug are woven entirely from wool. One of the salient features of this type of rug is its soft and flexible structure because it is woven entirely from natural sheep wool, which makes it a kind of natural insulation because it is warm in the cold and cool in hot weather due to its wool properties.
Another important feature of this type of rug is its high durability and long life. So if you are going to buy a durable rug, wool rugs will be the best option.
Of course, buying this type of rug is not recommended for people who are allergic to woolen rugs.
Warp-Wool Rug
In this type of woolen rug, the warp is made of wool and the weft (its pile) is woven from other fibers. The price of this type of rug is usually lower than all wool rugs, depending on the fibers used.
Whole-Silk Rugs
This type of rug is the most expensive and exquisite type of carpet and has a very fine texture. The reason for its high price is the use of silk in its warp and weft. This type of rug is more delicate and beautiful than wool rugs, however, it is very resistant to stains. So that if liquids such as tea and soft drinks are poured on it, the solution will be only a wet towel and some carpet shampoo.
Warp-Silk Rugs
This type of rug is made of a combination of wool and silk. In this way, the bottom (the warp) is made of wool and the base is woven entirely of silk.
Silk Flower Rug
As the name implies, only the flowers and leaves on this type of carpet are woven from silk thread and the other parts are made of wool. Silk rugs are cheaper than whole-silk rugs and warp-silk Rugs, but they are very valuable artistically.
Soof Rugs
In this type of rug, only the design of flowers and shrubs is fluffy and the background is covered with thin and thick wefts.
Classification based on types of Iranian rugs
Iranian carpet is very rich in terms of design and color and has a high diversity so that it is categorized into 19 different designs, each of which has its own sub-branches, so it responds to all tastes and interests and has a special place in modern decoration.
Despite this; The design of the carpet is divided into three general categories: Lachak Toranj, Kheshti, and Afshan, which we will explain here.
Lachak Toranj design
Lachak means corner and in the corners of most Iranian rugs, we see this triangular pattern. Toranj is also an integral part of this design, which is usually circular and oval in shape and is placed in the center of the carpet as a medal, and in fact, consists of several lines and patterns.
Rugs that have these two designs (Lachak and Toranj) are called Lachak Toranj. Of course, some rugs also have only one of these two designs, in that they have Lachak and do not have Toranj (Lachaki) or vice versa, they have Toranj and do not have Lachak (Toranji).
Kheshti Design (Frame)
Another beautiful and popular design of Iranian rugs is the Kheshti design, which is very popular in other countries and has many fans. In this design, patterned rectangles are placed next to each other in the form of bricks that sometimes show themselves together with order and sometimes without order. The design of the Kheshti is very rich in terms of design and color, and each brick has a different design and color, but it fits the other bricks.
Afshan Design
As the name implies, this design includes flowers and shrubs scattered throughout the rug and is usually woven without Lachak and Toranj. The design of these flowers and shrubs is as if they are all connected and their beginning or end can not be distinguished, and this issue doubles its beauty.
Classification of Iranian carpets and rugs based on dimensions
Persian carpets
Carpets are divided into four categories in terms of dimensions: small, medium, large, and very large, and their dimensions vary from 2 by 3 meters to 4 by 6 meters and even more.
rug
This type of rug usually has an area of less than 4 meters (it is woven in dimensions of 1.5 by 2.5 meters and 1.40 by 2.20 meters) and if they are fine woven, they are called curtains. 3-meter rugs with dimensions of 2.20 by 1.40 meters are also called rugs or two-sided rugs.
Kallegi (Wide Runner Rugs)
Kallegi is a type of carpet with approximate sizes of 2 in 1 or 4 in 2 or 6 in 3 and larger, which are usually 1.5 to 2 times its width and even more. Kallegi is narrower than the rug but its length is longer than the rug.
Runner Rugs
This type of rug, as its name implies, is used to cover the sides of the environment that are not completely covered with the rug. Of course, due to its dimensions, which are woven with widths of half a meter or 1 meter and 70 centimeters and a length of 3 to 10 meters, it is also used for corridors and stairs.
Other types of rugs include Zaro Nim, Zar-o-Charak, Poshti rugs (with an area of less than one meter and dimensions 60 by 90 cm and are woven for the top of backrests) and mat (woven in small dimensions for the treads), which differ only in size.
The carpet is woven in dimensions from less than one meter to above 24 square meters and each has a special name according to its dimensions.
